Self-Care to Feel Beautiful From the Inside Out

Self-Care to Feel Beautiful From the Inside Out

It is so easy to feel not-so-great when the winter blues come a-knocking or when the pandemic is cutting you off from things you used to love. But the most important thing to know about your wellbeing is that it starts from the inside and radiates out. So, here are a few tips that help keep a balance in life, even at its most chaotic.

Acknowledge That Your Feelings are Valid

Feelings of stress that you miss your friends, anger that you can’t go out to eat or general confusion that things are so different are all common signs that iso life isn’t always smooth sailing. But the key here is to recognise these feelings – and when you do, make sure you deal with them positively.

It is ok not to be ok. Instead of getting more upset at the fact that you’re not feeling fabulous, take some time out to digest it. Own your emotions.

A good way to really connect with yourself spiritually is through meditation. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach but a good place to start is this:

  1. Find a quiet place
  2. Close your eyes and focus on taking slow, deep breaths
  3. Understand that intrusive thoughts will come about. Don’t get angry or frustrated at them. Redirect your attention to breathing.
  4. There is no set time. Go as long as you like until you feel at peace.

Channel Emotions Productively and Change Things Up

More time at home has equalled more screen time for many of us – so lets use it to our advantage. Direct your emotions to a creative outlet, a proven way to let your troubles subside.

Our hot tip is to step out of your comfort zone because we don’t have much to lose anymore. Take a deep-dive into the internet to find something that makes you go ‘wow’. It could be a good-looking cupcake on Instagram, a crafty DIY project on Pinterest or a painting idea from YouTube.

One other solution to channel emotions out adaptively is exercise. It releases endorphins that trigger positive feelings for an instant de-stress sesh. Exercise is also super customisable, where you can pick and choose practically anything to your liking. What muscle groups to target, what equipment you want to use and the music you want to jam to are all for you to pick!

Writing has also been a good outlet to release pent up tension. Whether it be a diary entry, or a fanfic-type story – its an awesome way to get those creative juices flowing. And if all else fails, one of the best things you can do for self-care is show gratitude. To do this, simply write down one thing each day that you’re grateful for. They’ll add up eventually and it serves as a sentimental, physical reminder of all your worth and all there is to love in this world (even in lockdown).

Make Yourself Look as Good as You Feel

You can also look awesome too to bring that inner diva back out. Find a makeup tutorial. Slap on a full face, glammed eyeshadow and dramatic falsies to match. We know we can’t go out and show anyone, which only means one thing: an at-home photoshoot. Set up the handy timer on your camera and get creative. People make the most mundane of things look amazing, like the light from their venetian blinds or homemade camera lens using things around the house.

When the makeup comes off, looking good doesn’t have to stop. Now that we have so much time on our hands, its perfect to invest time into our skincare – so your face looks as good with makeup on as it does with it on. Sit back with a face mask - we recommend either making one at home or buying from small businesses. While you’re at it, set the mood with your favourite scented candle (another opportunity to support a small biz) and do what makes you feel good.

Skincare also includes your body and hair. Homemade scrubs and exfoliants are fun and oh-so money-savvy. Take bubble baths and slather on lotion because even if you never go outside – your skin deserves some love! As for hair, now is a good time as ever to experiment with the haircut that you’ve been debating on – and if it looks bad, there’s no one around to judge you anyway! And if you’re not as daring, try playing around with homemade hair masks or try new hairstyles that you’ve always wanted to try.

Even though self-care comes in all shapes and sizes, self-care is still something that everyone deserves. Take the time to follow some of these tips, make them your own and take care of yourself!
